Between the years 1940 and 1960, numerous impossibly daring gold heists occurred, and many are still entirely enshrouded in mystery. These heists would occur within war zones, financial centers, and maximum security vaults. You had your literal mountains of gold that up and vanished amidst the chaos of World War II, just as you had your masterfully, meticulously planned out robberies within fortified banks and airports. While some of the gold that was stolen during these heists was successfully retrieved, there are still plenty of other cases where none such is the case.

1. The British Bank of the Middle East Heist

During World War II, Axis forces were busy targeting British financial strongholds in the Middle East. This included a major bank in Iraq. Both gold and cash were looted as result of wartime plundering efforts, which weakened British economic control within the region. The exact amount stolen remains unclear, but much of it was never recovered.

2. The Nazi Gold Train (1945)

While Nazi Germany crumbled away in 1945, rumors ran amok about a train that was packed with stolen gold, artwork, and valuables that’d been hidden by the retreating Germans. The train’s fate somehow remains a mystery to this day.

A shipment of gold ended up vanishing under unexplained circumstances in post-war Thailand. This led to speculation of corrupt officials and organized crime involvement. Even with numerous investigatios being carried out, no solid culprit ever ended up being identified.

6. The Brink’s Armored Truck Heist (1950, Boston, USA)

This was considered the crime of the century. A gang of masked men made a getaway with $2.7 million in cash, gold, and securities from a Brink’s armored facility in Boston. The heist itself was planned impossibly meticulously over two years and then executed without a hitch.

7. The Singapore Gold Smuggling Scandal (1953)

Criminals were able to siphon gold from Singaporean banks and then smuggled it overseas, thereby sidestepping financial regulations. The operation that involved corrupt officials and international smugglers was eventually uncovered, but it was already too late.

A masterfully coordinated gang was able to infiltrate Heathrow Airport. They ended up seizing a huge shipment of gold bullion that was headed for international trade. Even with the airtight security the robbers got away with stealing millions in gold that largely still remains missing.

9. The Johannesburg Gold Refinery Raid (1955, South Africa)

A team of thieves was able to break into a high-security gold refinery and then got off with a fortune in refined gold. The raid was largely considered to be an inside job that swiftly exploited weaknesses present within the refinery’s security system.

It was just before the Cuban Revolution that a grand heist at Havana’s central bank was pulled off. It resulted in millions in gold seemingly vanishing into thin air. Many believe that corrupt government officials had a hand in it, and to this day the missing gold’s whereabouts remain unknown.

An armed gang was able to ambush a gold transport convoy. They executed a precision strike to seize the precious cargo that was onboard. Even with a nationwide manhunt underway, the perpetrators were able to evade capture for years on end. A large chunk of the stolen gold was never successfully recovered.

Gold smugglers were able to intercept a government gold shipment at Manila Airport, and then made off with a huge haul. Authorities struggled to hunt down the stolen gold and this could’ve been the result of it being melted down and then sold off discreetly.

A huge gold theft occurred at the docks of Bombay (now Mumbai), which was carried out by an organized crime syndicate. The heist shone a light on numerous vulnerabilities within the port security, which led to a crackdown on smuggling rings.
