15 Beetlejuice Quotes That Are Pure Dark Comedy
The original Beetlejuice film came out in 1988, and was classified as an American gothic dark fantasy comedy horror film. Tim Burton was responsible for directing the film from a screenplay by Michael McDowell and Warren Skaaren. The screenplay itself was based on a story by McDowell and Larry Wilson. The film featured a star-studded cast that included Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, and of course, Michael Keaton as the main character. As for the plot of Beetlejuice, the first installment followed a recently deceased couple. As ghosts the couple isn’t allowed to leave their house. They then reach out to make contact with Beetlejuice, who is renowned as a degenerate bio-exorcist. He’s tasked with the pressing responsibility to scare the home’s new guests away. Suffice to say, things get interesting very quickly. We’ll take a look at some of the most infamous quotes from the film.
1. “Go ahead, make my millennium.”
You’ve probably heard one person or another shout out, go ahead make my day. However, in the case of Beetlejuice and this quote it’s all about the main ghoul having a heated moment after an intense butting of heads with Adam and Barbara.
2. “It’s showtime.”
This might be Beetlejuice’s most famous line. It’s showtime. This was most often recited without any actual recollection of the show he was responsible for introducing.
3.”Maybe we should try that Beetle guy.”
What you see most from the characters of Adam and Barbara throughout Beetlejuice is how dang infectious their seeming innocence and obliviousness truly is. So, when Barb goes ahead and suggests that they try things out with the Beetle guy. You just can’t help but laugh.
4. “Please, they’re dead, it’s a little too late to be neurotic.”
Amidst her harrowing journey to go and actually meet Barb and Adam, Delia Deetz, played by Catherine O’Hara, has a multitude of iconic one-liners. In this case, we’re talking about how absurd it is to be neurotic when certain other characters are outright dead.
5. “If you act now, you get a free demon possession with every exorcism.”
Because who wouldn’t love a free demon possession in a world that’s being tended to by a devious ghoul like Beetlejuice.
6. “I’m the ghost with the most, babe.”
Yeah, it doesn’t get much more Beetlejuice than a quick and raunchy one-liner like this one here. At so many points throughout the film it just seems like he refuses to exercise any inkling of self-control.
7. “These aren’t my rules, come to think of it, I don’t have any rules.”
Yeah, it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world to learn that someone like Beetlejuice isn’t much of a fan of navigating the world while playing by anything close to a silly thing like rules.
8. “Don’t mind her, she’s still upset that someone dropped a house on her sister.”
Naturally, Lydia’s pompous interior designer friend, Otho has plenty of one-liners throughout the film. If you’re going to go ahead and question Otho’s paranormal researching skills you’d best be prepared for him to fire back at you with a cunning rare insult.
9. “Never trust the living.”
Of course there are going to be some rifts between the land of the living and the land of the dead, even if they’re walking amongst one another.
10. “Maybe you can relax in a haunted house, but I can’t.”
So inconsiderate. Some ghouls don’t even take the time to consider the fact that there are plenty of humans that aren’t fans of walking and hanging around haunted houses.
11. “This thing reads like stereo instructions.”
If you’ve ever tried to read through stereo instructions without losing your mind altogether, you’ll of course be able to appreciate this sentiment.
12. “In heaven, there wouldn’t be dust on everything.”
Ah, Barb. Leave it to Barb to raise a spicy point like the one that she did here.
13. “The only one I think I can deal with is Edgar Allen Poe’s daughter, I think she understands me.”
Of course you’re going to get your fair share of Edgar Allen Poe references in a film that’s all about the maddened antics of a crazed ghoul.
14. “Rule number two is that the living usually won’t see the dead.”
There have to be some rules in this world. That world includes those that make up the living and of course, those that make up the dead. If the living were walking around everywhere and able to see the dead all of the time, things could get dicey.
15. “What’s the good of being a ghost if you can’t frighten people away.”
Seriously though. What fun is there in being a ghost if you don’t even get to collect any proper scares along the way. That’s what it’s all about.
