Lakes have always been mysterious, hiding secrets beneath their calm surfaces. Over the years divers, archaeologists, and curious explorers have found some incredibly bizarre things at the bottom of lakes. 1. Pre-Columbian Structures in Lake Titicaca.
In the 1950s, there were rumors of a lost city in the depths of Lake Titicaca. While the rumors were seen as false, an archaeological team found proof that the legends were true in 2000. The team discovered a temple beneath the surface of Lake Titicaca, proving this theory right.
2. WWII aircraft in Lake Michigan.
Lake Michigan holds a serious number of WWII aircraft, with some recovered, and some still submerged in the depths. The Navy used this lake for training exercises and numerous planes were lost during them.
3. Soviet Tank found in Lake Matasjarv, Estonia.
In 2000, a team found a Russian T-34 tank submerged 7 feet underwater in Estonia. The tank had been resting underwater for 56 years but was in remarkable condition. Imagine hanging with your buddies and stumbling upon a massive Soviet Tank.
4. Michigan’s Stonehenge.
While searching for shipwrecks in 2007, a team of archaeologists found something unusual. They found a circular formation of stones deep beneath the surface of Lake Michigan. The formation was labeled a mini-stonehenge, and was dated back to the last ice age when the lake was dry.
5. A Gnome Garden in Wast Water Lake, England.
In the deepest lake in England, several deaths were reported. Because of this, police sent an underwater search team to survey the lake. To their surprise, they discovered and removed a gnome garden. It was assumed that this weird garden would attract inexperienced divers and they would drown. Weirdly enough, just a few years later, the gnomes were replaced and put at an even deeper depth. The question is, who is trying to distract inexperienced divers?
6. Friday the 13th statue found in Lake Pleasant.
A statue of the character Jason was found in Lake Pleasant, but authorities had it removed because it was considered litter. Imagine going on a relaxing scuba diving adventure and seeing a murderous villain at the bottom of the lake with you.
7. PB4Y bomber in Lake Washington
Navy divers discovered a PB4Y bomber while surveying Lake Washington. It is said that the pilot attempted a bad take-off which resulted in the crash, and the entire crew swam to safety.
8. Shipwrecks.
Many shipwrecks have been found in the Great Lakes, but we want to share the HMS Ontario found in Lake Ontario. The 22-gun ship was the largest British warship on the Great Lakes in its time, but it unfortunately sank in 1780, killing all its passengers. It was discovered in 2008 by shipwreck enthusiasts and its location is kept private from looters and treasure hunters.
9. Skeletons found in the Colorado River.
A man was casually snorkeling in the Colorado River when he made a terrifying discovery. He came across two skeletons sitting in lawn chairs beneath him. He immediately notified the authorities who discovered the skeletons were made of plastic. Whoever played this joke is a genius, but a maniac.
10. A statue of Jesus at the bottom of Lake Michigan.
There is an 11-foot marble statue at the bottom of Lake Michigan depicting Jesus. It is said that the statue was sold to a diving team who put it there intentionally to pay respects to their fellow divers who had passed. Whether it’s a memorial or not, seeing this at the bottom of a lake is terrifying.
