29 Bad Designs That Were Doomed Ideas From The Start

We’re not exactly sure how some of the world’s more ill-conceived designs end up actually crossing the bridge between conceptualization and ultimate manifestation, but they sure do. The worst, though, is when a design has been so poorly put together that it ends up making your life genuinely more difficult. Some of these designs feel like they would go out of their way to make your day a bit more tiresome. Definitely no good at all.

1. The final step on these stairs looks like the floor.

PeteJoz

Even if you knew it was there, I’m sure you would forget from time to time.

2. So, apparently, this is a bench.

A playground featuring a modern climbing frame with metal bars. In the background, there is a set of swings, a bench, a fenced area, and trees. The sky appears to be at dusk, and the ground has both grassy and paved sections.

The most uncomfortable and dangerous bench you’ll ever attempt to sit on.

3. Seriously, who goes and walks down the stairs like this.

A triangular warning sign with a red border and yellow background showing a stick figure falling downstairs. The sign is hung with a single fastener at the top. It is mounted indoors, with a glass window and bookshelves visible in the background.
different_wind8260

Don’t walk like John Lennon down the stairs. Got it.

4. I’m very curious as to what’s behind this door.

A white door positioned midway on a concrete wall in a stairwell, with a metal handrail leading upward. The stark and minimalist surroundings emphasize the unusual placement of the door.
just_me_anonymously

Do you think Voldemort is back there?

5. The asterisk is used on every item.

A chalkboard menu rests on a wooden stand against a brick wall. The menu lists: Brew + Barm £5, Coffee + Pastry £4, Ice Cream Tub £3, and Iced Latte £4. A footnote states: (*Bacon or Sausage). The text is written in different colors of chalk.
randomer_2222

That asterisk is giving me a bad feeling. What does it mean? Anyway, I’ll take one ice cream tub, please.

6. Talk about an odd design for a light fixture.

A modern, geometric chandelier with black metal framing and cylindrical white bulbs hangs from a ceiling in a kitchen. The background features white cabinetry and a glimpse of a microwave oven.
dmacmcgee

I would not want that thing hanging over my head. Every guest you have over says, “Hey, did you notice what that thing looks like?” Yeah, we noticed.

7. This gate.

A narrow paved path winds through a lush, green wooded area. A blue gate blocks the path, allowing pedestrian access while preventing vehicle entry. Adjacent to the gate is a wooden bench, partially overgrown by surrounding foliage.
medi_dat

This is the type of work you do when someone tells you to do something that you do not want to do.

8. A seriously counter-effective barrier.

A urinal is covered with a piece of cardboard that has six large circular holes cut out. The cardboard has "Do not use please" handwritten on it. There is a strip of tape securing the cardboard, and a blue bucket is placed on the floor in front of the urinal.

For those who don’t know, this is absolutely a challenge that men have been training for their whole lives.

9. So, one of these doors has a recycling chute behind it.

Two gray doors labeled "Trash Chute" with white signs are side by side in a beige hallway. Both doors have silver handles and are located on a wooden floor.
representativekeebs

I would absolutely be marking the recycling door. Even with a sticker or something. Come on. Does anybody have a label maker?

10. Found this card at Walgreens

A card display features a card with an illustration of a person sitting in a blue chair, holding a book. The text "cut yourself" is on the card. Above, there is a label reading "Tough Times.
Paradoxyc

I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it says “some slack” on the bottom of the card.

11. This just looks mean.

A long, narrow section of pavement with numerous concrete parking bumpers arranged in a diagonal pattern, making it unusable for parking. The area is bordered by curbs, with some greenery and trees on the sides, and vehicles parked in the background.
fuegolicious

There has got to be a good story behind this very aggressive move.

12. The acronym doesn’t fit the text.

A poster on a brick wall outlines rules for the dining room. It features an acronym "ROAR": R- Clean up after ourselves, O- Use our time wisely, A- Use manners, R- Listen to adult. The poster has a cartoon image of a smiling lion in a blue shirt.
money_jackal

You know whatever adult that made this was so proud of it, too.

13. This carpet in a hotel I stayed at is a disaster.

A close-up of a floor transition between two different carpet patterns. The top section features a wavy, abstract design in brown and yellow, while the bottom section shows a geometric pattern with interlocking shapes in red and white. Edges appear frayed and uneven.

You know that if they’re cutting corners like this, they are not thoroughly cleaning the rooms either. This is a big red flag.

14. Hmm. Which is it?

Two mayonnaise bottles side by side. The bottle on the left has a label stating "Refrigerate after opening and store in refrigerator door. Do not freeze." The bottle on the right shows "Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise" with "No Refrigeration Needed" above it.
pizza-burrito

I don’t know what to do. Someone tell me what to do.

15. Just a nice hold in the wall that divides the townhouse bathroom and hallway.

A room with high ceilings has a unique architectural feature—a large, pentagon-shaped window opening that allows natural light from an adjacent space. There’s a partially visible open wooden door and a corner of a wall in the foreground.
enerrgizer_

Have you ever been in someone else’s bathroom and were horrified to hear how loud the voices in the other room were, knowing that they could hear you equally as well? Well, what if we made a design to make your side even louder?

16. This chessboard is simply not it.

A modern metal chess set displayed on a checkered board with sleek, cylindrical pieces in varying heights. The board is placed on a wooden surface, next to a book. The background features a wooden floor and a part of a patterned rug.
krispycollosus

I actually think this angle makes this seem less annoying than it actually is. Having to look over the top of pieces to know if they’re yours is not ideal.

17. This seat in a Swiss bus.

A blue fabric seat on public transportation is shown, with a pattern of small white squares. Part of a grey wall and floor is visible beside the seat. The edge of the image shows a grey object, possibly a bag or piece of clothing.
professionalidiot

I’ve ridden enough buses to know that you’re going to walk away with a sore right knee from being pressed up against that and a strange relationship with the person you sat next to because you rubbed up against their leg every time the bus hit a bump in the road.

18. I saw a promising house for rent today.

A cozy bedroom with parquet flooring features a corner shower unit with multiple settings, a pink bedspread on a wooden bed, a tiger-patterned rug, and a window with sheer white curtains. A wall-mounted air conditioning unit is situated beneath the window.
vyktorkun

The humidity that would add to your bedroom alone would be a nightmare.

19. Temporary tattoo with the earth upside down.

Close-up of a hand holding a sticker with the words "THERE IS NO PLANET B" surrounding silhouettes of mountains and trees. The hand has a blue painted thumb nail, and the outdoor background features people and some leaves on the ground.
politepony

Maybe it’s like putting a flag upside down when the country is in distress.

20. I was looking for the microwave when it dawned on me.

A modern kitchen with white cabinets, a tiled backsplash, and a wooden countertop. An oven and dishwasher are built into the cabinets. A microwave is circled in red and placed high above the counter. There is a sink with a faucet and soap dispenser below it.
sammy_clips

Imagine having to have a little stepstool just to be able to heat up your hot pocket.

21. This confusing WC sign.

Wall with two abstract restroom symbols. The left symbol suggests a male figure, and the right symbol implies a female figure. Both are made from simple lines and circles on a textured gray wall.
hedef_2023

Why do restaurants have to get cute about which bathroom is which?

22. No Added Apple, Sugar Cake

A packaged food item labeled "NO ADDED SUGAR APPLE CAKE" by the brand Diablo. The packaging is white with red accents, featuring an image of apple cake slices and whole red and green apples.
jackie_2222

I understand that they change the font color, but there’s no helping us that we’re going to read the line to the end.

23. Someone explain this railing to me.

The image shows a view through a large rectangular opening in a building, overlooking a street scene. A red bus and a car are visible below, with a large tree and several buildings in the background. The sky has a subdued, early evening hue.
probablyanocelot

Imagine all of the people who have slammed their hands into those right angles while walking up or down stairs.

24. Don’t Drive Safely?

A poster with the words "DON'T DRIVE" in large letters and "SAFELY" inside a yellow road sign shape below. The poster features a road-like background with white dashed lines and includes the message: "Do Drive Safely. Don't Drink While You Drive.
DmonOfUholy

There is no scenario where this sign made sense to print.

25. Not sure what this is even meant to say.

A modern wall sign features overlapping letters forming the words "SHERWOOD COME AS YOU ARE" with additional scattered phrases including "SAFETY," "GRATITUDE," "BETTER TOGETHER," "YOU MATTER," and "THRIVE." The letters are in a mix of light and darker colors.
amazing-fig-2624

This thing is winding me up.

26. This school tried to make the staircase to the cafeteria wheelchair accessible.

Indoor staircase with gray and white steps, blue handrails, and a small ramp on the left. Overhead lights illuminate the area. A closed door is visible at the top of the stairs with a stack of objects in front of it.

The people who design these things should spend at least 5 minutes in a wheelchair to understand the challenges they’re trying to solve.

27. My what?

A doormat with the phrase "wipe your paws" written in black cursive. There are paw prints on either side of the text, and the mat is displayed on a store shelf.

Paws. That took me way too long, even with the help of the paw prints next to it. It would be a conversation starter for guests, I guess.

28. Why would you choose this carpet for your hotel?

A long corridor with a patterned carpet featuring wavy, purple lines on a dark background. Doors line each side, and lights are mounted on the walls, leading to a bright area at the end of the hallway.
BaronVonBroccoli

Unless this is a Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas-themed hotel, no thank you.

29. This is the first time a clock has ever given me motion sickness.

A round wall clock with a silver frame showing the time as 10:11. The clock face has black numbers and hands against a white background. A reflection of light is visible on the clock's glass surface.
submufo2

The vertigo this thing is throwing off is too much.
